Born at village Nawan Ballharrwald near Ghuman, Tehsil Batala, Distt. Gurdas Pur, Punjab, India, in house of Sardar Prem Singh, Avtar Singh turned into Sant Amar Dass after receiving Guru Deeksha at disciple Deeksha ceremony from Sant Sarju Dass Ji, the presiding Mahant at Gaddhi, Tap Asthan of Acharya Shri Chander at Sidhwan (Ghuman) Tehsil Batala when he was studying in fifth grade. Going through long years of austerity of Yogic life Sant Amar Dass Ji became contented within himself. He never demanded any thing from any body. Being a great Yogi he always kept himself busy in studying Upanisads and Puranas and applying that wisdom of spirituality on himself. Moved by the great Rishis of the past, this great yogi always try to plunge himself into deeper and deeper meditation and devotion without caring for the comforts of the life. And at last on August 8th, 1996 he left this world forever for having eternal union with Hari (personal God) leaving his only unfortunate disciple in this unlivable furious world.

They reached at Yogi's cottage and later Swami Tehal Dass was astonished to see the real existence of his dream Sant Yogi. He surrendered his soul by putting his head to Sant Yogi's feet. Sant Yogi just said "Hari Om". For couple of years he remain in touch with Sant Yogi Amar Dass Ji, and in turn Sant Yogi Amar Dass Ji tested his patience, obedience, tolerance, greediness, selfishness, contentment and aggressiveness through different ways and means. After few days, Sant Yogi Amar Dass Ji accepted him as disciple performing the required ritual and changed his name to Swami Tehal Dass.
